Booster Club News: Fall Practices Are Here!

The wait is over. Fall sports practices officially began Saturday, August 1 across Ohio, and athletes at Clinton-Massie, Wilmington, Blanchester, and East Clinton are on the field, on the pitch, and in the gym. With opening night just 18 days away, here is the latest on what is happening this week and how the community can support our student-athletes.

The first week of August marks a turning point in Clinton County. After months of summer conditioning, 7-on-7 drills, and youth sports camps, the official fall sports season is finally here. Helmets are strapped. Cleats are laced. And booster clubs across the county are working behind the scenes to make sure every athlete has what they need to compete.

Rooted in Wilmington, Glasshouse Realty proudly serves Clinton County and surrounding communities. We live here, our kids go to school here, and we believe in the organizations that invest in our students. Here is your early August update on booster club happenings, practice schedules, and ways to get involved before the season kicks off.

Athletic Passes for 2026-27 Now Available

A great piece of news for Hurricane fans: the Wilmington Athletic Department has announced that athletic passes for the 2026-27 school year are now available. These passes provide admission to all home sporting events at both Wilmington Middle School and Wilmington High School, including football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, wrestling, and more. Season passes are on sale now through the district. (Source: Wilmington News Journal)

Purchasing an athletic pass is one of the simplest ways to support the athletic program. Proceeds go directly to funding team operations, and having a pass makes it easy to show up for as many games as your schedule allows. Contact the Wilmington High School athletic office or visit the district website for pricing and purchase information.

Fall Sports Division Realignments for 2026: What Changed

The OHSAA released its fall sports tournament division assignments earlier this summer, and there are several notable changes for Clinton County schools entering the 2026 season.

2026 OHSAA Division Assignments for Clinton County

  • Girls Soccer: Wilmington, Clinton-Massie, Blanchester & East Clinton all in Division III
  • Volleyball: Wilmington in Division III, Clinton-Massie in Division IV, Blanchester and East Clinton in Division V
  • Girls Golf: Wilmington in Division I (highest division for golf)
  • Football: Wilmington moves to Division IV, joining Clinton-Massie — Blanchester and East Clinton both in Division V

(Source: Wilmington News Journal)

The most significant story is Wilmington football joining Clinton-Massie in Division IV for the first time, setting up a potential postseason meeting between the two county rivals. The cross-county rivalry game on October 2 at Clinton-Massie will carry even more weight this season with both teams competing in the same division.

Girls Flag Football Named OHSAA's 29th Championship Sport

In a landmark decision, the OHSAA elevated girls flag football to its 29th recognized championship sport for the 2026-27 school year. The sport will begin with a pilot season this fall, with the first OHSAA state championship tournament expected to follow soon after. (Source: Wilmington News Journal)

This is a huge opportunity for Clinton County schools. Girls flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and the OHSAA's official recognition means schools can now offer it as a varsity sport with full athletic department backing. Booster clubs that get ahead of this trend can help their schools establish programs early, attracting athletes who may not have found their sport otherwise. If you are interested in seeing girls flag football come to your school, bring it up at the next booster club meeting or reach out to the athletic director.

What First-Week Practices Look Like Across the County

Fall practices began Saturday, August 1, and the first week is all about evaluation, conditioning, and installation. Here is what each school's athletes are working on this week:

Clinton-Massie Falcons

The defending SBAAC American Division champions (10-2 in 2025) began practice this week with a scrimmage against Xenia High School on the schedule. Head coach Dan McSurley and his staff are focused on reloading after a deep postseason run last year. The Falcons open the regular season August 21 at Waynesville (7:00 PM).

Wilmington Hurricane

The Hurricane returned to the practice field with a young but hungry roster. The "Meet the Team" event is set for August 14 from 4:00-5:00 PM, giving families a first look at this year's players and coaches. Wilmington opens the season August 21 at home against Ross (7:00 PM). Athletic passes for the 2026-27 season are on sale now. The Hurricane Strength Program under Coach Chris Reynolds ran through July and has the team ready to go.

Blanchester Wildcats

Wildcat athletes are in their first week of practice under the guidance of new and returning coaching staff. Blanchester and East Clinton will kick off each other's seasons on August 21 in a rivalry opener. The Athletic Boosters of Blanchester are actively seeking parent volunteers and sponsors for the fall. Check blanathleticboosters.org to get connected.

East Clinton Astros

The Astros are building momentum after a spring that saw baseball push Miami Valley Christian Academy to the wire and tennis earn the program's first SBAAC league win. Fall practices are underway, and the boosters are organizing volunteer assignments for the season. Visit East Clinton Athletics to get involved.

Scrimmage Central: What to Watch This Month

August scrimmages are where the season starts to take shape. They give coaches a chance to evaluate personnel against live competition before the games count. Here are the key scrimmage dates to circle:

  • Clinton-Massie vs. Xenia — Pre-season scrimmage, date and time TBD. The Falcons typically hold two scrimmages before opening night. Check Clinton-Massie Athletics for confirmed dates.
  • August 14 — Wilmington "Meet the Team" event, 4:00-5:00 PM at Wilmington High School. This is not a scrimmage, but a chance to meet fall athletes and coaches before the season begins.
  • August 21 — Opening Night! Ross at Wilmington, Blanchester at East Clinton, Clinton-Massie at Waynesville. All games at 7:00 PM unless noted.

Scrimmages are a great opportunity for booster clubs to test-run their game-day operations. If you have ever thought about volunteering on a Friday night, reach out to your school's booster club now. They need you before the crowds show up.

Booster Club Focus: What Is Happening This Week

August is the busiest time of year for volunteer booster organizations. Here is what each club is working on right now:

Clinton-Massie Athletics Boosters

Membership renewals for 2026-27 are open at $50/year. Sponsorship packages for the fall season are available for local businesses. The boosters are also preparing concessions and game-day logistics for the opening home stand. Sign up at cmathleticsboosters.org.

Wilmington Hurricane Boosters Association

Preparing for the August 14 "Meet the Team" event and coordinating concession stand volunteers for the season. The boosters also manage scholarship programs for graduating senior athletes. Get involved through Wilmington City Schools PTO and Boosters.

Athletic Boosters of Blanchester

Following the success of the Third Annual Blue Tie Event, the boosters are now focused on fall season preparations. They are seeking parent volunteers for game-day operations and business sponsors for the 2026-27 year. Email info@blanathleticboosters.org or visit blanathleticboosters.org.

East Clinton Athletic Boosters

President Lynette Gulley and the East Clinton boosters are organizing volunteer sign-ups for the fall season. Fundraising plans including spaghetti dinners and golf outings are in the works. Visit East Clinton Athletics for details.

Why This Week Matters for Booster Clubs

The first week of August is the booster club equivalent of game week. While athletes are running drills and learning plays, booster volunteers are finalizing uniforms, organizing concession stand schedules, coordinating pre-game meal donations, and processing membership renewals. Without this behind-the-scenes work, the Friday night experience that Clinton County families love simply would not happen.

And here is the thing: you do not need to be a parent of an athlete to get involved. Booster clubs welcome community members, local business owners, alumni, and anyone who believes in the value of high school athletics. A few hours of your time, a small sponsorship, or even just showing up to cheer makes a tangible difference.

6 Ways to Support Student-Athletes This Week

With practices underway and opening night just 18 days away, here are six specific ways you can make a difference right now:

  • Purchase a 2026-27 athletic pass. Wilmington passes are on sale now. Every purchase directly supports Hurricane athletics.
  • Join a booster club. Clinton-Massie memberships start at $50/year. Blanchester, Wilmington, and East Clinton also accept members and donations year-round.
  • Volunteer for concession stand duty. August 21 is opening night. Most booster clubs need 4-6 volunteers per home game just for concessions. Sign up now before the slots fill up.
  • Sponsor a team or event. Local business sponsorships are a cornerstone of booster club funding. Contact your school's athletic director or booster club president to learn about sponsorship levels.
  • Attend the "Meet the Team" event. Thursday, August 14, 4:00-5:00 PM at Wilmington High School. Bring the family and show the athletes that the community is behind them.
  • Share on social media. Follow your school's booster club on Facebook. Share their posts. Invite your neighbors. Community awareness is the first step to community support.
